Kageyama Tobio x Reader  [ Soulmate!AU ]
A/N: Reader is Tsukishima Kei's sister and she's in her last year of middle school
Soulmate!AU where the first words your soulmate says to you is inked onto your wrist

Part 1 || Part 2

[Name] walked into Karasuno High School, a bento in hand as she looked around for the gym. Being a Saturday morning, the school was empty, aside from a couple of clubs having their activities.

She heard the familiar squeaks of volleyball shoes coming from behind a set of partially closed doors and when she peered inside, she saw a group of boys having a practice match. Pushing the door open, she cursed internally when a loud creak sounded.

"OHHH Noya-san, look! It's a cute girl!"

All eyes turned to her and she quickly sought out her brother, feeling awkward at the stares. It was easy to spy his tall lanky form, and the frown on his face was more than just a little familiar as he excused himself to walk up to her, ignoring the questions that a short guy and another bald player shot at him.

"What are you doing here?"

"Eh? Nii-chan, is that the way you greet your sister who painstakingly brought your bento all the way to school for you just because you forgot?"

"Alright. Thank you," Kei took the bento from her hands. "Now go back, and make sure you go straight home."

"But I want to stay and watch!"

Like both of her elder brothers, Tsukishima [Name] enjoyed playing volleyball, and watching volleyball matches was one of the things that the siblings often did together.

Seeing the pout on her face, Kei sighed resignedly and pointed to the bench where a pretty black-haired girl sat. "That's Kiyoko-san, our club manager. Go sit with her and don't be a nuisance."

A striking head of orange suddenly crossed the breadth of the court, and she gasped when the orange-haired boy jump up and spike the ball that was perfectly in-line with his hand. The setter must be amazing, she thought as the ball flew pass the opponents' defense and hit the ground.

"Woah Nii-chan! Everything happened so quickly! Can you do that?"

Kei scowled at his sister, nudging her to where Kiyoko sat. "That's the 'King of the Court' I told you about."

She nodded, recalling that one time when he mentioned his volleyball team having a really good setter. Kei returned to the court after being called by their captain and [Name] introduced herself to the manager before sitting down beside her, watching this 'King' intently.

The raven-haired setter moved confidently in the court, a calculated look in his eyes whenever he tossed to a player with pin-point accuracy. She found herself captivated by him, awe-struck by his talent. And when he turned to yell at the orange-headed boy, she would giggle at how riled up he got as they bantered.

~~

Kageyama could feel her staring at him throughout the game, and whenever he glanced at her, she would still be staring at him, not even bothering to hide the fact that she was watching him so closely.

It unnerved him.

A part of him wanted to scream at her to look away, or at least ask her why she was staring. He wasn't used to having a girl look at him like that, and to be honest with himself, he felt a little shy feeling her gaze follow his every move. He was so conscious of her that he couldn't concentrate solely on the volleyball that came flying straight at him, until it hit him squarely in the face.

He stumbled back a step and groaned at the pain which started making itself apparent when he touched the sore area on his nose. Thankfully, he wasn't bleeding, and was well enough to muster a deep scowl at both Kei and Hinata who were laughing openly at him.

"Kageyama! You alright?" Daichi asked, "You'd better go take a break for a while."

"I'm fine."

"Go take a break." The captain insisted, stifling a laugh of his own. "Put some ice on it if you need to."

Embarrassed from having a ball hit him in the face, he stormed off the court and walked to the bench where Kiyoko passed him a bottle of water, which he took and sat down next to the girl that kept staring at him.

'She must think I'm some loser... wait... Why do I even care about what she thinks of me?'

Blaming his unusual thoughts on getting hit in the head, he took a swig of water and stared straight ahead at the game that was going on, painfully aware of her presence next to him.

"So," a voice spoke up, making him give a sideway glance to the girl. "You're the king of the court?"

He let out a deep sigh. As if getting hit by a ball wasn't bad enough. Now some girl was asking him about that horrid nickname people gave him? He looked away from her, muttering, "I would tell you to shut up but I don't want to be rude," before he stood up and left the gym, not noticing how her eyes widened when he said that to her.

The fresh breeze outside was a welcome change from the gym's atmosphere and he made his way to the basins where he splashed his face with some water, relishing at the cool sensation on his skin.

So many times people had called him that, and even though it hurt to be taunted as such, that same sentence sparked a bit of hope in his heart.

His hands on the edge of the sink, he let the water droplets that clung unto his hair drip down while he looked at the words on his wrist.

So, you're the king of the court?

Once symbolising the words that his soulmate would say to him, those damn words on his wrist were something that he hated, and he long given up on trusting them to find his soulmate.

They were only there to mock him.

He recalled the innocent look on that girl's face when she asked him that,  and he realized that maybe she didn't even know the underlying meaning of that nickname was. But then again, she was Tsukishima's sister. He heard the guy say so himself. So of course she, too, would find pleasure from taunting him...

A meek voice cut him off from his thoughts. "Hey..."

He turned to look at the girl who was rubbing her forearm awkwardly, looking down at the ground instead of straight at him.

"Are you feeling alright?" She asked. "Y-your face, I mean."

Thinking she was making fun of him, he frowned and snapped at her, "What's it to you anyways?

"Why are you even following me?"

When a hurt look crossed her face, he started to feel bad and soon felt an urge to apologize, but he stood his ground and growled out, "What the fuck do you want? Can't you just leave me alone? It was because of you that I got distracted and got hit by the ball in the first place!"

The girl looked up at him and for the first time, he noticed that instead of the golden eyes that her brother had, she had [e/c] eyes that were clouded with anguish.

"It's not supposed to be this way," she whispered. "You're not supposed to be so mean..."

"What are you talking about?" Kageyama asked, completely dumbfounded.

Wordlessly, she she lifted her hand to show him her wrist. There, written clearly on her skin, were the words that he said to her earlier.

I would tell you to shut up but I don't want to be rude.

"You're..." His breath caught in his throat when he realized who she was and all of a sudden, the implications of his outburst dawned onto him and guilt started to weigh down on him like a boulder upon his shoulders.

She pulled back when he took a step towards her, and he could see tears welling up in her eyes as she spat out bitterly, "Sorry for being concerned, king. I'll take my leave now."

"W-wait," he realized he didn't even know her name, and when he tried to get reach out to try to stop her from walking away, he had no choice but to grab her wrist. "I'm sorry! I didn't know you're-"

"Let go of me!"

She struggled against his grip, not listening to his attempts of apology. Tears were starting to streak down her face and Kageyama's desperation grew.

"Not until you let me explain! I'm really-"

"NII-CHAN!" Her voice was shrill as she screamed out for her brother, and he must have been out looking for her because not long after she started shouted out for him, Tsukishima Kei appeared around the corner.

"[Name]!"

Upon seeing her crying face, Kei glared at Kageyama, anger burning in his molten gold orbs. "Let go of my sister. Now."

"Tsukishima, wait. I need to talk to her!"

"I think you've said more than enough, Kageyama. Let. Her. Go."

Throughout all their quarrels, Kageyama had never seen his teammate so furious, and reluctantly, he let go of her hand.

Regret filled his entire soul as he watched her walk away with her brother. Every step she took away from him made him yearned to reach out to her.

But all he could do, was helplessly watch her walk away.

~~

Her brother had an arm around her shoulder protectively as they left Kageyama standing there. She was still crying, and Kei had never felt such a strong urge to beat someone up as when he saw his little sister in such a state.

Sending Yamaguchi a text, Kei led her out of the school gates to bring her home.

"I know why you call him a king now, Nii-chan," she sniffed, rubbing away the wetness from her cheeks when she finally stopped crying.

"It's because he's so unreasonable... not because he's great or anything..."

Kei sighed heavily and looked down at his sister. His tone, albeit a little stiff, was laced with a soft concern when he asked, "Why were you even with Kageyama?"

Her voice dropping down to a whisper, she turned away from her brother and told him the truth.

"He's my soulmate."
Two fics in one day is quite a feat for me. Wow great job icy xD

I'm quite proud of this!! It's actually in the wee hours of the morning rn, so I could actually be delirious, but I'm kinda content with how it turned out!

This was originally meant to be fluff. But the opportunity arose and it turned slightly angsty. Also, one of my rl friends asked me why I only write fluff. I hope you're seeing this, friend! Finally something that's not fluff xD

I may or may not write a second part based on the response this gets

EDIT: I'll be writing a second part to this sometime soon!

Finally, this is dedicated to :iconanimepanther921: AnimePanther921 for the wonderful prompt. Thank you so much, and I hope you liked it!
