Kuroo Tetsurou x Reader

You were more than
just a fleeting summer rain.
You gave me the entire horizon,
and painted a beautiful rainbow
after the turbulent storm

You never wanted to question the relationship you had with Kuroo. It was the kind of relationship that just happens; when all of a sudden everything is dark, and you can only hope that he will catch you when you fall.

It was raining heavily the first time you met him.

Grey clouds gathered in the sky, raindrops fell onto the pavement, creating the perfect atmosphere for a nice nap; which was precisely why you were late on your first day of college. Even when you held an umbrella, the wind made sure to blow your way, effectively drenching your side as you ran to class. A quick glance to your watch showed that you were already fifteen minutes late, and from the rumors you heard during orientation, the professor conducting that particular lesson you were late for was not one who dealt well with tardiness.

With a small push, you opened the door of the lecture hall slightly, peeking into the large room. Aside from a couple of low murmurs here and there, the only other sound coming from the room was the monotonous droning voice of the lecturer. From the small opening you were spying from, you saw a seat right in front of the door, which was thankfully unoccupied.

When the lecturer was looking down at the computer, you quickly slipped into the room as quietly as possible before sliding down into the seat you saw earlier, all in record time.

You let out a huge sigh of relief when you saw that the lecturer hadn’t seem to notice you enter, and started to pull out the materials for class. A short chuckle could be heard from beside you, and from the corner of your eye, you saw a guy with black hair smirking at you as he twirled his pen.

Trying to be polite, you whispered, “Sorry, I hope this seat wasn’t taken.”

“It wasn’t.”

Biting your lip, you turned back to the front, not knowing what to say to that. You slid lower into the seat, praying that the lecturer wouldn’t notice your sudden appearance when he gotten his slides in order and started talking again. But of course, things just never went your way.

“You there, at the back. Have you always been sitting there?”

You froze as the lecturer pointed towards you, causing heads to turn. Feeling your cheeks pale, you opened your mouth to apologize but before you could say a word, a deep voice came from beside you, “Yes sir, she was here since beginning of class.”

The old lecturer obviously didn’t believe the guy’s words with the scrutinizing glare he shot in their direction. “Really?”

“Yes, really.”

At his bold statement, a couple of snickers erupted from all around the room.

“I am old but I am not blind, Kuroo. In the future please let your friend there speak up for herself. And you, young lady,” he stared directly into your eyes, “I take punctuality very seriously here.”

Nodding mutely, you let out a breath you didn’t know you were holding when he began an overview of the topics to be covered that semester.

“That didn’t go as expected.” The guy beside you noted casually.

“It was my fault for being late anyways,” you half smiled at him, “and thank you for that. You didn’t have to.”

“Not a problem. Students like us need to stick together, after all.”

“Students like us? What do you mean?”

Looking down at you with a mischievous glint in his eyes, he smirked, “the kind that likes to sleep during the rain.”

“You overslept too?”

“Nah, I fell asleep earlier.”

“You dozed off within fifteen minutes of class?” You gave him an incredulous look, “How’s that even possible?”

“Well, the weather’s nice for a nap, don’t you think?” He pauses for a moment before introducing himself. “I’m Kuroo Tetsurou. What’s your name?”

As you opened your mouth to speak, a loud voice interrupted. “The two of you! If you’re going to keep distracting my class with your chit chat, get out!”

The door behind you clicked shut as you stepped out of the building.

A look of disbelief still painted all over your face, you asked the person walking a couple of steps behind you, “Did we really just get kicked out of class on the first day of school?”

“Yup.” Kuroo nodded, looking way too happy given the situation.

“Wow...”

His chuckle made you turn to look at him, and only then did you notice how tall he actually was. “You know, I never managed to catch your name…”

“[Name].”

The grin on his features grew wider. “So, [Name], since we’ve got some time before our next lecture, how about grabbing a coffee together?”

“You’re unbelievable,” you told him, trying to contain the smile growing on your lips.

“Why thank you! It’s been a long time since someone called me that.”

Letting a laugh escape from your throat, you nudged him in the direction of the café. “Let’s go, Kuroo.”

Opening your umbrella, you gave him a look when he conveniently slipped beneath it, standing next to you. And when he shot you a smile, you let out a small sigh and began walking; a grin on your face as you made sure the umbrella occasionally bumped into his bedhead.

~~

The room was dimly lit with the glow from the moon, the window giving a view of the clear night sky. All of the term tests were finally over, and you were lying in your bed, comfortably wrapped up in the blankets when your phone buzzed from the small bedside table.

Groaning as you pushed yourself up, you squinted at the bright light of the phone and fumbled with it, nearly dropping the device when you saw the name flashing before your eyes.

Kuroo Tetsurou

Pressing the ‘answer’ button, you brought the phone up to your ear. “Hello?”

“Hey… Did I wake you?”

“Not exactly, why are you calling so late?”

“Oh, I was wondering if you wanted to come outside for a while.”

“Outside?” Your voice raised an octave and you immediately got up, walking towards the window to look down.

“Yeah.”

Sure enough, Kuroo was standing downstairs the block of your dormitory, his messy hair as prominent as ever. Almost as if noticing your gaze, he looked up, giving you a small grin when you locked eyes.

“O-okay, hang on a moment. I’ll be down in a sec.”

“I’ll be waiting at the nearby bench.”

He hung up before you could speak any further, and giving you one last look through your bedroom window, he spun on his heel and began to walk away. Taken aback with his curious behavior, you pushed it aside and quickly changed and brushed your hair before going down to meet him.

From afar, you could see his silhouette sitting on the bench by the main pathway, and as you got closer, you caught a glimpse of the exhausted look on his profile.

Quietly, you sat down next to him, keeping a respectable gap between each other. He didn’t say a word, so you took it upon yourself to break the silence that was becoming a little too much to bear.

“Should we really be out at this hour?” Glancing at your phone, you noted, “It’s nearly 3 am.”

Kuroo shrugged nonchalantly, stretching his legs out in front of him. “Probably not, but you’re still here, aren’t you?”

“That’s because you called me.” Seeing the way his words lacked that usual teasing tone, you shifted so you could face him better, placing your arm on the back of the bench. “What’s wrong, Tetsu?”

“…Nothing’s wrong.”

“Really?”

Turning towards her, he gave her a small smirk that didn’t reach his eyes. “Really.

You didn’t believe him. Not one bit. Every single day you were with him, and never had you ever seen him look so… vulnerable.

“You know you can tell me if something’s bothering you, right?”

He sighed heavily, running his hands through his hair as he bent forward, elbows resting on his knees. “It’s nothing, really…

“Its just that I’m so tired with everything, and I felt like seeing you.” Turning his head slightly, he shot you a small smile. “You always make me feel better, you know?”

You couldn’t help but return his smile, your heartbeat speeding up in your chest. Feeling a little lightheaded at his words, you joked, “Is that supposed to be a confession?”

“If you want it to be,” he mused, a familiar gleam appearing back in his eyes as he looked at you.

Glad that he was back to his usual personality, you felt a sense of relief washing over you in spite of the blush that started to appear on your cheeks. Leaning backwards into the bench, a regarded you with a look that made your heart flutter.

“Do you wanna make out?”

You were barely holding on to your composure before, and when he asked you that question with such a look on his face, you completely lost it, jumping up to your feet so that he wouldn’t be able to see the redness that stained your cheeks.

“What the fuck, Tetsu?! How can you ask someone something like that?”

He laughed heartily at your response, moving to stand before you. “Sorry, sorry, I was just teasing you.”

“Yeah well, it’s not funny at all, so if you’re alright now, I’m going back to my room.”

“Hey wait,” a hold on your arm stopped you from walking away, and turned you back around to face him. “I’m sorry for teasing you like that, but… I really do want to kiss you.”

Eyes widening, you glanced up at him, only to be caught by his piercing gaze, making it impossible to look away. His hand moved to caress your cheek, taking a step closer to you as his lips hovered a couple of inches over yours. “If you don’t want to, you can always push me away.”

You nearly scoffed at his words. By this point, he would have known about your feelings towards him, so why didn’t he just kiss you already? A small twitch of his lips told you that he was still messing with you, and a sudden bout of boldness made you wrap your hands around his neck, pulling him down to close the distance. You could feel the upward quirk of his lips when you initiated the kiss, and as he wrapped his arms around your waist, you couldn’t help but smile too.

Although it was short, the brief moment made you feel more amazing than you’ve ever felt before.

~~

Sometimes being alone was dangerous. Just one negative thought can poison a mind. It’ll slowly creep onto you, playing at the back of your mind, until your head is filled with nothing but negativity.

A single thought is all it takes.

Assignments had been busying you throughout the semester, but now that all of the deadlines were over, you had more time to think about other things instead of drowning yourself in work as you had been doing for the past couple of days. Things like friendships… relationships… Kuroo…

From the day you first kissed him, your feelings towards him only grew more and more. But for Kuroo, well, you weren’t very sure how he felt about you.

Weeks had gone by and the seasons had started to change, but aside from the extra affection he showed you, he treated you like how he would to anyone. There was not a single time he introduced you as his girlfriend, neither did he ever take you out for special dates or anything. It confused you, and you had no idea where you stood in his heart.

‘He’s not serious about me…’

That thought plagued your mind all day, making it hard to focus on anything and caused many sleepless nights. Subconsciously, you started to avoid Kuroo as best as you could, though it was kind of difficult when he was in the same classes as you. But whenever lessons were over, you would come up with an excuse to distance yourself away from him.

You were on the way to grab some lunch when someone pulled you aside, easily fending off your kicks and punches.

“It’s me.” The exasperated voice made you stop struggling and you moved away from Kuroo’s hold.

“Sorry, I thought you were a robber or something.”

Ignoring what you said, he cut straight to the chase. “Why are you avoiding me?”

“I’m not avoiding you,” laughing nervously, you smiled sheepishly at him.

“Don’t give me that bullshit,” he frowned. “You’re always running away after lessons and you don’t talk to me like you used to anymore.”

He took a deep breath, his voice was softer than expected when he spoke again. “If you're going to avoid me like this, at least give me a reason, [Name]…”

“Tetsurou…” Every word felt like it was stuck in your throat and you stared up at him. “Are you serious about me?”

“What? Of course! I-“

“Well it sure doesn’t feel like it,” you cut him off mid-sentence before you lost the courage to continue. “You never even asked me out properly and you’re showing me all sorts of mixed signals and I’m just really really confused about how you feel towards me.

“I don’t want to be some girl chasing after you in circles, Tetsu… I don’t want to be some girl you play around with until you get bored… You know I like you, and if you’re not certain about this relationship then let’s just end whatever it is we have right now because I don't ever want to have my heart broken by you.”

Your voice wavered towards the end and you could feel moisture building up in your eyes, but you looked up, willing them to disappear.

“Is that what you really think about us?” His previous look of frustration was replaced by a softer, troubled visage.

Wordlessly, you nodded and he immediately took you into his arms, shrouding you in his warmth. “I didn’t know I’ve been making you feel this way...”

You pressed your face further into his chest, hearing the rapid beating of his heart. “I hate feeling like this.”

Kuroo leaned his cheek on the top of your head. “You don’t have to, because we can be whatever you want us to be.”

“And what’s that supposed to mean?”

“It means- I’ll always want to be with you as long as you’ll have me. So stop doubting us and just fucking come back to me already.”

A warm feeling welled up in your chest and you smiled against his shirt, a proclamation playing at the tip of your tongue. “I think I might love you, Tetsu.”

He froze for a moment. In that split second, you swore your heart stopped beating until he hugged you closer to him.

“What do you mean ‘you think’? You’re supposed to tell me that you’re madly in love with me and-“

You laughed at his exaggerated voice. “I take it all back. You’re trash and I hate you.”

His chest rumbled as he joined in on the laughter, pressing a kiss to the crown of your head.

“Yeah, I love you too.”

With those words, any qualms you ever had about your relationship disappeared. Because like how some relationships were like fleeting rainfalls that come and go in a blink of an eye, others -like the one you shared with Kuroo- were different.

No matter how many storms you’d go through, there would always be a rainbow at the end of the road, waiting to be discovered.
I'm finally done with this after so long ;u;
Honestly I can't say I'm satisfied with this to be a contest entry, but it'll have to do because today is already the deadline and I couldn't find time to finish it any earlier //sighs

This is for :iconlilysm: Lilysm's summer contest! I tried to go with a more figurative interpretation of the theme 'Summer Rain' where relationships reflect the cycle of a rainstorm and how they come and go very quickly, and rainbows symbolizes a deeper relationship that lasts after all the ups and downs.

I chose Kuroo mainly because I love his character a lot. And since this is a college!AU, he'd be more mature and I can see him as the type of guy who would make people fall blindly for him. His personality is really intriguing, and we don't see much of his serious side in the manga, but I'd like to think that he's more than just a sly and cunning captain, and that he has different sides to him too, including a more thoughtful and affectionate side, but not forgetting an act or two of mischief XD

Thank you for reading, and I really hope you'll like this story!
I own nothing but the fic
